Choosing a Standby Generator for Your Home or Business
Jan 25th, 2007 by Powerup
Electricity has become so important in todays lifestyle. Just a few minutes of a power interruption can be enough to make you lose your temper, lose your money or lose both your temper and money. Electricity has become such a necessity that most homeowners and businesses find purchasing a standby generator necessary.
Deciding to buy a standby generator is vastly different from actually buying one, however. Advanced as we generally are in matters technological, most of us are practically clueless when it comes to choosing the right generator. Following are some tips on choosing a standby generator.
What do you need a standby generator for?
The first step to looking for a standby generator is to think about the appliances or equipment that need alternative power. After making a general list of your electrical appliances and equipment, rank them all in order of importance. On top of the list, put those which your home or your business needs to keep running even in cases of power interruptions. At the bottom of the list should be placed those which you dont need as urgently.
Making this list is crucial so you will not neglect to include any equipment that should be kept running even if theres no power from the main lines. You also need to rank the equipment so you will not overestimate your electricity needs. You might save money by excluding those electrical gadgets that you dont need to power.
How much power do you need?
Next, you should list down beside each entry the maximum amount of power needed to start each. Remember that some appliances require a higher wattage on start-up than what they actually need to continue operating. You can usually find the wattage information written on a sticker at the back of the equipment. If you cant find it, ask a licensed electrician to compute it for you.
After each entry has a start-up power requirement listed beside it, you must now add the wattage together to come up with the minimum amount of power that the standby generator you’re purchasing should provide. I say minimum because that is the absolute lowest amount of power that your generator should produce if you don’t want any problem starting up appliances in cases of power outages or if you don’t want to damage your equipments by making them run on insufficient power. In fact, if budget allows, you can buy a generator that provides much more power than your minimum requirement. Extra power can come in handy if ever you add extra appliances or equipment.
What are your choices?
After computing how much power you need you can now begin to look at your choices of standby generators. There are a lot of generator models available in the market so it may be quite overwhelming to find the right model for you. You have to establish that one, your brand has good features and proven quality; two, your brand has reliable service; and three, your brand has a model generator that provides the power you need.
After you have chosen your brand, buy your generator and ask a competent electrician to install it for you, schedule periodic maintenance and the next time there’s a power interruption, you will never need to lose your temper, your money or both ever again.
